so
in a moment of fear
in the face of love
you can slam on the brakes
you can turn off the lights
remain still, no crunch of gravel
so
when you see the flashlight
far off, too close
you can clench your fist
you can close your eyes
don’t breathe, no sound
so
as you protect yourself
from the face of love
you can lie by saying nothing
you can turn to run
immobile
but it’s all pointless
really
I watched her shatter today
a train wreck sliding
in the gravel of a
broken smile
all bones and
multifaceted irises
of blue and black and green
but mostly blue
her lids blinking up
a regular tornado
as if we all wouldn’t notice
her glossy unfocused sheen
as long as she kept
her eyes dry and smiled
brighter than a supernova
but it was all pointless really
because behind it
behind her
I saw you
